OTHER SERVICES

Non NHS Medical Examinations

Certain services are not covered by the NHS, for example, medical examinations for special purposes such as HGV licences, pre-employment medicals or certificates of fitness for sub-aqua, racing or driving, insurance claim forms, passport forms and yellow fever vaccination certificates. Private medicals are available by special appointment and there is a charge for all these services. When any charge is made the British Medical Association scale of recommended fees is used.

Contraception and Sexual Health

Contraceptive services and advice, including emergency contraception, which can be effective for up to 72 hours (if unprotected sexual intercourse has already taken place), is available to all. These services are entirely confidential and can be given by any family doctor or your local Family Planning Clinic. Tel No: (01295) 271495.

Sexually transmitted diseases are common and can affect any sexually active individual. They are best avoided by using barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms (available free from the surgery or local Family Planning Clinics) or Femidoms (the female condom).

If you think you may have a sexually transmitted disease you can seek confidential advice from your doctor or from your local Genito Urinary Clinic (The Harrison Unit) Tel No: (01295) 264145.

Disease Management Clinics

There are some diseases, which affect a large amount of people who need to be seen regularly for check-ups, advice and treatment.

The following clinics are offered:

Asthma
Diabetes
Heart Disease/Blood Pressure
Leg Ulcers

They are run by nurses with special training, with input from all of the doctors. They are designed so patients with these problems can book appointments, which suit them, at regular intervals and for longer amounts of time than ordinary surgeries.

Health Visitors

Health visitors are involved with health promotion. Advice is available on all aspects of child and family health, eg growth and development, diet, behaviour, immunisation and contraception.

The health visitors can be contacted at the surgery or by telephone 01295 277010 Monday - Friday. An answerphone facility is available. A weekly child health clinic is held on Wednesday 1.00 - 3.00pm.

Promoting Your Health

If you wish to give up smoking, eat a healthier diet or have concerns about your lifestyle, advice and support can be offered by your doctor, nurse or health visitor.

A large number of leaflets and videos (that can be borrowed) are available at the surgery.

Screening

Some diseases can be prevented, or treated more successfully, if detected early by screening. In view of this, we encourage our patients to attend for the following:

Cervical Screening - a recall system exists to call all eligible women between the age of 25 and 65 years for a cervical smear every three years. Appointments are available with the practice nurse or your own doctor if preferred.

Routine Breast Screening Arranged by the Health Authority - is available to all women between 50 and 65 years of age, but 'Breast Awareness' is encouraged in all women. A leaflet is available from the surgery.

Testicular Self Examination - it is important that all men, particularly those aged 15-40 examine their testicles regularly and that they are aware of any changes, eg pain, swelling, that may be of concern. Information is available at the surgery.
